Withlacoochee River Water Meets Water Quality Standards

The Florida Department of Health in Hamilton and Madison counties has lifted a precautionary health advisory issued on February 5. The city of Valdosta, Georgia reported a spill made up of a combination of storm water and untreated sewage, totaling 837,465 gallons that overflowed into One-Mile Branch, Two-Mile Branch, Knights Creek, Mud Creek and Sugar Creek, which flow into the Withlacoochee River. This is a correction by the department of the original anticipated spill of 1.3 million gallons.

Recent river water samples taken by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection indicate the river water meets surface water quality standards ensuring the public they may resume water-related activities.
